How to use it

  • Squeeze lime over fruit first, so the powder has something to cling to.
  • Season popcorn, fries and wings while they are hot.
  • Shake over the bowl as you toss it, in two or three rounds.
  • Close the cap right away and keep the jar away from steam.

Storage

The label says to keep it in a cool, dry place. Close the cap after every shake: steam from the stove and wet fingers are what make the powder clump.

You get salt and a sour bite first, from the salt and citric acid at the top of the label, then heat, over a savory base of onion powder, MSG and yeast extract. That base is why the same jar works on fruit and on fries. Lumbre means fire, and the Fuego blend is the hot one.

A light, even dusting is one serving on the label: one gram. A cup of fruit takes about two, a bowl of popcorn about three. The jar holds about 148 of them.

It is part of the Tizon pantry, and the same powder dusts every strip of our carne seca.

Questions about Tizon Lumbre Fuego Seasoning

What is in your Tizon Lumbre Fuego seasoning?

The jar lists salt, maltodextrin, citric acid, dextrose, MSG, sugar, onion powder, hydrolyzed soy protein, spice, Red #40, sodium diacetate, yeast extract, natural flavors and Yellow #6. There is no lime juice in it: the sour comes from citric acid.

Can you use Tizon seasoning if you avoid soy?

No. The jar says "Contains Soy", from the hydrolyzed soy protein in the ingredient line.

How many calories does Tizon Lumbre add to your snack?

The label lists 0 calories, 0 g fat and 0 g sugar per one-gram serving. Sodium is the number to watch: 122 mg per serving.

Should you count Tizon as a low-sodium seasoning?

No. It is a salted chile powder, and about 12 percent of its weight is sodium. Use it as a finishing shake, the way you would use salt.

How do you keep Tizon from clumping?

Close the cap right after you shake and keep the jar away from the stove and the sink. Steam and wet fingers are what turn the powder into lumps.
